FAQs

What is a UPI ID (VPA)?

A UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address or VPA) is a unique identifier linked to your bank account, like yourname@okaxis or 9876543210@ybl. You can send money to anyone using their UPI ID without needing their account number or IFSC code.

Is UPI safe for large transactions?

Yes. UPI uses two-factor authentication — your UPI PIN plus device binding. All UPI transactions are encrypted. However, be cautious of scams: you never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Banks and NPCI will never ask for your PIN.

Can I use UPI internationally?

UPI is expanding internationally. It is currently accepted in countries including Singapore, UAE, France, UK, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan. NPCI International is rolling out UPI acceptance in more countries. For international fund transfers to India, use SWIFT/wire transfer through your bank.

Does UPI require an IFSC code?

No — for most UPI transfers, you only need the recipient's UPI ID (VPA) or mobile number. However, if you want to link a bank account manually to a UPI app, you will need your account number and IFSC code. Look up your bank's IFSC code here.
