About MICR Codes

What is a MICR code?

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is a 9-digit code printed at the bottom of cheque leaves using special magnetic ink. It identifies the city, bank, and specific branch and is used by the RBI's cheque clearing system (CTS — Cheque Truncation System).

Where do I find my MICR code?

Look at the bottom of any cheque leaf from your bank. The MICR code is the 9-digit number printed in the middle — between the cheque number (on the left) and your account number (on the right). It is printed in a distinctive machine-readable font.

MICR vs IFSC — what's the difference?

IFSC is used for online transfers (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, UPI) — it's what you give when adding a bank beneficiary online. MICR is used exclusively for physical cheque processing. Both uniquely identify a bank branch, just for different payment systems.
