Use NEFT when:
- → You're transferring any amount and don't need it to arrive instantly
- → You want to transfer above ₹5 lakh without paying any fee
- → You're setting up a recurring transfer via net banking
Use RTGS when:
- → You're sending ₹2 lakh or more and want faster settlement than NEFT
- → You're making a high-value payment (property purchase, business payment)
- → The recipient needs the funds urgently and the amount is above ₹2 lakh
Use IMPS when:
- → You need instant transfer and the amount is up to ₹5 lakh
- → You're transferring on a holiday or late at night and need immediate credit
- → The recipient doesn't have a UPI ID but you have their account + IFSC
Use UPI when:
- → Amount is up to ₹1 lakh and you have the recipient's UPI ID or phone number
- → You want the simplest method — no IFSC code or account number needed
- → You're paying a merchant (scan QR code) or splitting bills

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is faster — NEFT or RTGS?
RTGS is faster. RTGS settles transactions individually in near real-time, while NEFT processes in half-hourly batches. However, RTGS has a minimum amount of ₹2 lakh. For amounts below ₹2 lakh, NEFT is your only option between the two.
Can I send ₹10 lakh through IMPS?
No. The IMPS limit is ₹5 lakh per transaction. For ₹10 lakh, use NEFT (free, 30 min–2 hr) or RTGS (free, near real-time). You could split it into two IMPS transfers of ₹5 lakh each, but this may incur double charges.
Do I need an IFSC code for all four methods?
You need an IFSC code for NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS. UPI does not require an IFSC code — you can pay using a UPI ID (VPA) or phone number. Learn more about IFSC codes.
Are NEFT and RTGS available on bank holidays?
Yes. Since December 2019, both NEFT and RTGS operate 24×7×365, including weekends, Sundays, and bank holidays. IMPS and UPI have always been available 24×7. Check our bank holidays calendar for reference.
